Parks and Nature
Golden Hill Park and its Memorial
Gardens is a moment’s walk away from the
main shopping area and provides an oasis
of tranquillity along with a public
bowling green ad children’s play area. As
part of the shopping centre environmental
improvements, a newly created sensory
garden within Golden Hill Park will
provide a haven for the senses.
Other nearby parks include Abbotsfield and
Davyhulme Parks. Also known locally as
Chassen Park, Abbotsfield Park is
especially worth visiting on a Sunday when
the Urmston and District Railway Society
operate a miniature train around the park.
The park also enjoys a number of events
throughout the year including the annual
May Day Steam Rally and the Mayor of
Trafford’s Charity Bonfire. Facilities
include a miniature railway ride, 3 tennis
courts, bowling green and children’s play
area. In 1963 the Council booked the The
Beatles to play at the Urmston show. At
the time of the booking the fab four were
not too well known, but by the time they
appeared at Abbotsfield Park they were
worldwide stars.
Urmston Meadows, owned by the Mersey
Valley is home to a startling array of
wildlife ranging from frogs to sparrow
hawks to 21 recorded species of butterfly
whilst Davyhulme Millennium Nature
Reserve, on the western bank of the
Manchester Ship Canal, safeguards a mixed
landscape of wetland, woods, water
features & open land. It includes a
designated Site of Biological Importance.
The reserve has been designed to encourage
a wide range of outdoor pursuits including
bird watching, walking, having a picnic and
traditional games.
Sport
There are also two leisure centres on
the doorstep.
Urmston and
George Carnall
Leisure Centres have a wide range of
facilities including swimming pools,

courses in the area, Flixton and
William
Rowe.
Urmston also has a number of heritage and
sports attractions close by, including the
Imperial War Museum-North and
Chill Factore as well as
Manchester United and
