Urmston’s
medieval origins are reflected in its
name. It is thought to have originally
been known as Orme’s Easton or Ormestun –
the 'tun' or dwelling of Orme Fitz Seward,
whose land passed in the 13th century to
Richard de Trafford. The land was lost by
the de Traffords, but they won it back
after a duel!
Urmston remained a small farming community
until one of the first railway stations on
the Manchester to Liverpool line was built
at Urmston in 1873. With its fast links to
the major cities of Manchester and
Liverpool, Urmston became a sought after
suburb for those professionals and
managers working in the city. The
development of Trafford Park, the world’s
first (and still the biggest) industrial
park, attracted additional wealthy
residents to Urmston’s leafy surrounds.
This transformed the town into a major
conurbation within Trafford.
Once a township within the Parish of
Flixton, Urmston became an urban district
of the administrative county of
Lancashire, under the Local Government Act
of 1894. The Local Government Act of 1972
abolished the Urban District of Urmston.
In1974 Urmston became part of the
Metropolitan Borough of Trafford, in the
newly created Greater Manchester county.
